What was her childhood like?

her entire childhood was pretty much a struggle. they lived in west germany from a few months after she was born until she was about six. she doesn’t remember much from when she was a toddler. her earliest memories are of when she was about three or four, and anything she remembers from that time was just her mother basically in a bad mood constantly. magda treated her as if she were an annoyance, never tried to hide the fact that having her around only made things more difficult for her. natalia always felt like her mother’s love is something to be earned. ( spoiler alert she never did ). she also remembers the radio. her mother listened to the radio a lot, to the news, in particular because her father had been trapped in the iron curtain back in the czech republic.

natalia and her mother struggled financially, for as long as she can remember. they lived day to day, and there would be times, especially when she was really young, during the time of the war and the years that followed, when they would have no food on the table, nights when there would be no shelter above their heads because they couldn’t afford rent. they struggled to survive, but magda’s smart and resourceful. her willpower to survive has always been strong, despite difficulties hurled at them. she’s also good at taking advantage of opportunities ( and of people ), and so they managed. and those were qualities that natalia learned to adapt on her own, which would help her as she started to grow older. still, she’s always been a bit more naive, gullible — magda was aware of that, and so she always had to watch natalia, also tried to dictate everything and for the most part natalia let her.

magda took care of natalia in the physical sense. would cook, clean, do most of the housework until natalia was a little bit old enough to do things by herself. magda was never really… like she wasn’t the type to make natalia do everything around the house or anything like that. she wasn’t unnecessarily cruel but she was never really kind either. emotionally, magda did as much as she could to toughen her up, never tried to shelter her from how harsh the world can be and taught her how to be a survivor, much like herself. she wasn’t loving either, which usually made natalia feel lonely sometimes, though she’d never tell her mother because it’d only be treated as a weakness. there were more important things to worry about than how she feels.

overall, it wasn’t really the best childhood. she didn’t get to experience being a child much, even. but she’s tough, and she’s fine and if you ask her she’d probably tell you it was hard, not exactly a part of her life she likes to look back on that much. but it made her stronger, there’s that at least.
