ALEX.

She considered attempting to throw the next set of questions at her friend. She doubted she’d be successful this time either, but that had never dissuaded her from trying. However, the smile she found as she glanced back at Petra completely disarmed her. That charming, delicate demeanor, it was one the strongest weapon’s in her arsenal. “I—” She awkwardly tugged at her earlobe as she thought about that first question. She didn’t regret the kiss, it had been nice, but it had been just them getting caught in the spirit of the season. Right? “Some kisses… they’re only for the holidays, and that’s what happened, just… a holiday kiss,” she fumbled and moved on to the next questions. “I don’t. I don’t kiss all my friends. Well… you can kiss your friends… like you could give them a kiss or two on the cheek to say hi. But not everyone likes kisses. Some people are not comfortable and we have to respect that. Okay? And you—” A beat as she weighed in her words. “You should save your lips for friends that mean a lot to you, friends you really really trust, and you don’t get many of those.” Pensive eyes lingered briefly on her friend’s countenance considering the nature of their friendship. Over the years, Petra had been exactly that and more: loyal, supportive, essential. A small nod as she agreed on needing some rest; she was also going to need some wine, but she wasn’t going to say that out loud to them. “Now, you heard Mommy, last two questions.” Two fingers wiggled up in the air as she spoke. “Bring them.”

Her eyes shift back and forth as she looks on while Alex continues to navigate her way through questions she probably would’ve avoided altogether if the twins had asked her instead. The kids are listening intently, taking every word in and she can only hope they’ll take everything they’re learning tonight all the way to when they’re older, in the future — a future she worries less and less about these days because she knows she’ll always have someone to lean on, knows she won’t have to face anything alone if she doesn’t want to. And it’s a comforting thought, something Alex’s presence has always provided her with through the years. She brings so much warmth into her home, that it’s impossible for her heart to not feel completely at ease right in that moment, because however far from perfect things might be — there’s always all of this. Something she believed, at one point in her life, she’d never get to have. And so her eyes are earnest as they remain fixed on the other woman, spoken words a blur as her thoughts begin to stray and it’s only when she hears the word Mommy that her focus zones back in. “What does kissing on the lips feel like? Does it feel different when you kiss someone you have special feelings for and when you kiss your friends you don’t have special feelings for? How do you know when you have special feelings for someone?” And Anna frowns, “But I wanted to ask more questions too!!”
