        “Oh.” Eyebrows crinkled at the answer. She was used to dealing with bloody battle wounds and infections, with sudden deaths out in the field, with controlling her emotions to avoid revealing vulnerability. She was not used to illnesses that required long-term treatment; those involved a hope and a patience she lacked. “I’ve heard ginger tea helps. —With the side effects,” she suggested sharing a small smile with the woman. “My mom. I brought her in for some tests her doctor wanted to run. I keep telling myself that she needs me, the emotional support, but there’s this tiny voice in the back of my head mumbling: you should be at work, the world’s going to end if you’re not there…”

         She normally doesn’t make it a habit to engage people in conversation. Certainly not in the hospital, but the brunette seems nice enough — talks enough for the both of them and she supposes it’s a better way to pass the time than waiting idly for each second to tick by. The smallest of smiles find its way to her lips and she gives the stranger a nod of acknowledgement as she makes a mental note to ask Dr. Asmani about ginger tea later. “What are you, Supergirl’s alter ego?” Her smile widens just a fraction. She’s only kidding, of course. “I’m sure the world can handle you having one day off.”
